In June 2011, executive members of the Ukrainian-Canadian Students’ Union (SUSK) met with MP Wayne Marston to discuss the current issues regarding human rights abuses in Ukraine.  These acts range from repression of academic autonomy to politically motivated charges and arrests.

Academic Rights and Freedoms:

As a student organization, SUSK strongly opposes Ukrainian Government official’s actions taken to remove the autonomy of academic institutions and harassment and intimidation of the academic community, focusing on historians who draw attention to Ukrainian national resistance to Soviet rule.  Recently, Ukrainian historians, academics, and researchers have been the subject of detention, harassment and questioning by officials from Ukraine’s Security Service.  Well-documented cases include those of Ruslan Zabily, Roman Krutsyk and Fr. Borys Gudziak.  More information on these actions of harassment can be found at:

Persecution of Political Opposition:

The recent arrest of Yulia Tymoshenko, former prime minister and leader of the opposition, is the latest in a string of arrests and detainments of prominent political opponents to the current Yanukovich government. Perhaps Oles Doniy, member of parliament, Our-Ukraine – People’s Self-Defense faction says it best:

“If someone did not understand after the unjustified arrest of Yuriy Lutsenko that it was only the beginning of the dismantling of freedom and democracy and the launch of political reprisals, now they should look the truth in the eyes. And the truth is that this government will not settle before the entire political opposition is either behind the bars or in exile.”
