The Holodomor was the barbaric and systematic starvation of more than 7 million Ukrainians over a period of just 18 months in 1932-33, on the most fertile lands in Europe. This included a third of all children in Ukraine who perished as a result.

November is National Holodomor Awareness Month. Please participate in some of the events commemorating Holodomor in the Ottawa community.

The Living (Живі) tells the story of the tragic events in Ukraine in 1932-33 and one Welshman’s attempts to tell the world what was happening. It presents a new angle on Stalin’s man-made famine as Ukrainians who were witnesses to the millions who died and the millions more who suffered horrendously, tell their heartfelt stories.

Holodomor Awareness Exhibit by Ukrainian Students’ Club

Please stop by to see our annual Holodomor Awareness Exhibit. We will have many posters with information on Holodomor, statements from survivors, photos and old newspaper articles. Thank you to the League of Ukrainian Canadians (LUC) for providing us with this Exhibit. If you would like to volunteer for this event, please let us know.

Holodomor Commemoration Ceremony

A dedication, with a short program, candle lighting, and laying of a wreath for the victims of genocide at the Tribute to Human Rights Statue on Elgin at Lisgar.

On November 26th, at 7:32 pm (to mark 1932 – the year the Famine-Genocide began) pause for a moment of silence to honour the memory of the victims of the Holodomor. Light a candle of remembrance in your home.
