We invite you to commemorate an event deeply rooted in our history, the Holodomor famine-genocide of 1932-1933. The genocide has been recognized by many nations, such as Canada and the US, but not Russia. Holodomor is often ignored in history classes, and most people know very little about it, which is largely due to denial by Russia. However, with more records being released, most scholars agree that the Soviet Communist regime… purposely strictly enforced impossible to meet grain quotas on Ukraine, in order to starve the Ukrainian people who wanted to retain cultural independence. Blaming it on a bad harvest, the Soviet government attempted to suppress accusations of human rights violations, denying foreign aid, and ultimately imposing veto power on the UN Security Council against classifying it as a genocide in 1943.

An estimated 7 to 10 million people starved to death during those years, and monuments and exhibits around the world have been established in their memory. This Friday, November 18 at the UCC we will have display boards up with more information, stories from survivors, and news. There will also be a display at Weldon, on the first floor near the circulation desk, November 15th-30th.

We hope to see you there,
The Ukrainian Students’ Club Exec
